1949年10月13日，中國新民主主義青年團中央委員會決定，在全國統(tǒng)一建立中國少年兒童隊，1953年8月21日改稱中國少年先鋒隊。沐浴在黨和政府的光輝下，“共產(chǎn)主義接班人”的種子在幼小心靈扎根，少先隊事業(yè)蓬勃發(fā)展，截至2025年12月31日，全國共有少先隊員1.12億名，中小學(xué)校少先隊大、中隊輔導(dǎo)員298.9萬名。中小學(xué)校少工委17.2萬個、少先隊大隊17.2萬個、中隊282.8萬個。

中國少年先鋒隊是中國少年兒童的群團組織，是少年兒童學(xué)習(xí)中國特色社會主義和共產(chǎn)主義的學(xué)校，是建設(shè)社會主義和共產(chǎn)主義的預(yù)備隊。凡是6周歲到14周歲的少年兒童，愿意參加少先隊，愿意遵守隊章，向所在學(xué)校少先隊組織提出申請，達到入隊要求后，經(jīng)批準(zhǔn)，就成為隊員。少先隊的隊旗是五角星加火炬的紅旗，五角星代表中國共產(chǎn)黨的領(lǐng)導(dǎo)，火炬象征光明，紅旗象征革命勝利。少先隊的隊歌是《我們是共產(chǎn)主義接班人》。少先隊的標(biāo)志是紅領(lǐng)巾，它代表紅旗的一角，是革命先烈的鮮血染成。
